Surprising Treatment Options For Migraine Headaches

When you suffer from chronic migraine headaches, you spend a great deal of your time worrying about whether or not a flash of light or a sudden noise will trigger another one. And while you may have tried various conventional treatment options like prescription and over-the-counter painkillers, retreating to a cool, dark room, and caffeine your migraines seem to keep coming back. What you may not have considered is some of the less conventional and more surprising treatment options for your migraine headaches. So, get to know some of these options and give them a try as soon as possible.

Chiropractic Care

Many people think that going to the chiropractor can only help with back discomfort or pain. However, chiropractic care is far more versatile than that and can actually help to relieve some of the pressure and pain of migraine headaches.

Rather than just treat the symptom of the problem (the migraine headache itself), a chiropractor will try to determine the underlying causes of a person's migraine headaches. Sometimes, such issues can occur due to postural issues and spinal misalignment.

When the spine is not properly aligned, the nerves that run along the spinal column can get blocked or pinched. This can result in pain throughout the body and can be a contributing factor to migraine headaches. A chiropractor will perform spinal manipulations to encourage the spine back into proper alignment freeing those nerves to operate properly.

Botox Treatments

Perhaps one of the most surprising treatment options available today is the use of botox injections to help treat migraine headaches. However, this migraine headache treatment has been gaining in popularity and notoriety.

To treat migraine headaches, a doctor will administer several botox injections in the head and neck region. This is repeated at intervals over a period of several months. The botox is strategically injected to attempt to dull the pain of future headaches by preventing the muscles from contracting.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a form of migraine treatment that a person will use when the symptoms of a migraine headache begin. It is a device that sends magnetic signals (pulses) to the nerve cells of the brain to block or stop the pain of a migraine headache.

The device, however, should not be used by a patient who has any metal in their cranial region, face, or mouth. This means people with metallic fillings, a metal plate in their head, or metal screws in their jaw should not use TMS as a migraine treatment as it can cause damage to these metal structures.

With these surprising treatment options in mind, you can get to the work of treating your migraine headaches in new ways. The only thing you have to lose is the pain of your next migraine headache. Contact a local chiropractor, like Smith Chiropractic, for more information.
